British Columbia – Okanagan Lake – South

IMG_1906

Okanagan Lake - South Provincial Park campground is located on BC Hwy 97, which is the main Hwy through the Okanagan region. There are several ways to access this campground either traveling south from Kelowna on Hwy 97 or north from Penticton and Summerland on Hwy 97. This campground is located just 11.3km north of Summerland.

This campground has 37 sites the vary dramatically in type and privacy. We found the sites that bordered on the left hand side entering the park were the nicest of all the sites.  There is a steep access road down from Hwy 97 to the campground entrance. This is a rustic campground and there are absolutely no services here beyond a central wash house with flush toilets.  The closest water is in Penticton 28km away or a 24min drive.

The campground is big rig friendly and can accomodate rigs over 32ft on 16 sites. Certainly while we were there we saw several Class A's that were over 42ft.  Most of the sites are designed to accommodate RV's up to 32Ft.

Most RV's  and 5th wheels were parked along the main road through the campground, with smaller trailers and tents in sites closer to the lakefront. In the center of the campground is a large bath house with a large grassy field behind it.

The site we reserved was a nice outer road site and was backed up against the hillside. The foliage on both sides of our site offered very good privacy, and the site itself was level. Certainly we had enough room for the RV, Toad and dolly.

The site itself was roomy, though the picnic table was rather close to the RV and the parking pad. this gave us a narrow passage as we squeezed between the RV and table to get to the front of the site.

The backyard was very nice to look at, and was somewhat private; but it did connect to all the other campsites that ran up and down the main road. Keeping Annie in just our little slice of this amazingingly lush backyard was difficult.

Lorraine has finished setting up our site, and we are set for the next five days. Everything we needed to glamp our way in the Okanagan and call this site home was now unpacked.

Now This campground is not overly large or has a lot of amenities to occupy kids. there is a beach and a play field with a small playground. We used this campground as a jumping point to explore the surrounding areas that lay along Hwy 97.

As I said the campground had a beach which was very nice and long so lots of space to find your private spot. When we arrived at the campground forest fire smoke filled the lake valley and made it incredibly hard to see across the lake as you can see by the grey background in the picture.

Here you can barely see the other side of the lake. We found the Water here to be somewhat cooler than the water at Christina Lake. so swims were short but refreshing.

Annie certainly did not mind the temperature of the lake. In fact I think he enjoyed getting cold after a hot day at the campground. There was'ant a day that we stayed that he did not get wet.

My beloved admiring the view.

The wildlife at this park was interesting. a few squirrels and a lot of blue jays. Almost everywhere you walked in the campground you could find a blue jay kicking around.

IMG_2071

On our second day at the campsite this blue jay kind of adopted us. He would hop into our site and eat bird seed we sprinkled on the ground and generally made himself at home.

IMG_2074

This little bird was so brave it would hop right up to the dog's water dish and have a drink. It was amazing to watch day after day as this bird out smarted the dog.

On the night of the third day the weather changed a bit, the winds picked up and rain fell. The next day everything smelled crisp and clean and this was the view we were treated to of the lake.

For the next two days we were treated to beautiful sunny smokeless skies. As our adventures abroad were at an end, we spent the last day of our stay here in the Okanagan at our campground, enjoying what the beach had to offer.

Happy Trails

Nuts & Bolts

This Campground is nice but realistically it is better used as a jumping point to other areas and attractions located up and down Hwy 97. This campground is big rig friendly but offers no services whatsoever, not even a sani-dump or potable water to be had here. One good thing cell service was excellent throughout the park. Generators are allowed but only between the hours of 8am to 9:30am and 5pm to 7pm. A night here will cost you $35.00/night. Reservations are highly recommended as this campsite is always booked full during high season. They can be made here:
