If you lucky enough to have an oven in your RV then you know it can be a challenge to use it. Especially if you are an accomplished cook or baker at home. Your RV oven is not commercial quality let alone consumer quality. So what are you to do when you want to use it? We ll here are some tips that we have used over the years with our ovens. By the way we love our RV oven, and use very frequently when were out camping. It is we think much better than the convection microwave and adds a homelier and earthy feel to your RV.
Tip#1 – Get the right size
If you haven’t noticed your RV oven is much smaller than a regular oven, so therefore you need to adapt and get bake wear that will fit your oven. On average you can fit a 10x15” cookie sheet and a 9x13 baking dish in your oven comfortably. Smaller dishes of course will work wonderfully. Shopping the second hand stores will certainly net you some reasonably priced bake ware and pans that will fit these measurements.
Tip#2 – Get A Stone
Like Pizza get a baking stone. There is no other way to cook a pizza in a RV oven without using a stone that won’t end in disaster. Its heavy but worth the weight and care required to transport it without breaking it.
Tip#3 – Get a thermometer
Knowing the real temp of your oven is important to successful cooking in an RV oven. Spend a few dollars and get a good oven thermometer, it will save you sanity.
Tip#4 – Adjust that rack
Make sure your rack is in the middle or lower position if you want more heat, but I find the middle works best for most cooking situations.
Tip#5 – Always Preheat
I think this one goes without saying, you would do this at home do it in your RV too. Enough said.
Tip#6 – Be Flexible
Cooking in an RV oven requires patience and flexibility. Not everything will cook like your used to at home. Some things will cook faster and others slower, so watch your food and be flexible while cooking it.
Finally have fun and experiment, Lorraine has come up with some really good concoctions using our RV oven, and I have enjoyed eating them.
