TPMS – Tire Pressure Monitoring System – Is it necessary?

I have been RVing for about 15 years and I never gave my tires much thought. I have had three RV's now and for two of them I never had any issues with tires. Lucky? I guess, certainly it is a crap shoot, whether you will have issues with your tires, but on my third RV i decided i better not take any chances. Now three years ago we started towing a toad using a tow dolly behind our old RV. This put ten tires on the road. With our new RV being mainly fiberglass, and with ten tires on the road i decided that if I had a blow out it would be catastrophic to the RV. Certainly it would of caused major repairs to fix the damage from a blown tire.  So I bit the built and purchased a TPMS and installed it on the new RV. IT cost $585 US to order it from the states, but it is now on Amazon (See our Gear Guide). the kit came with a monitor, six flow-through sensors for the RV and four Cap style sensors for the toad and dolly.

Lorraine was not sold on this purchase and thought it was an expensive toy. So I took the heat and sheepishly installed it on the RV.

Finally, it is our first trip in the new RV and we are both excited. we pull out of our driveway and head for the open road. Well we were 40min into our trip traveling down Hwy 1 the TransCanada, when all of a sudden the TPMS starts beeping very insistentatly. Lorraine annoyed tells me to stop the beeping. As I start to comprehend the situation I realize that the monitor is alerting me to a loss of pressure in my left rear inside tire, and it is dropping rapidly. Once I realized I was going to lose a tire, I quickly pulled over into an interchange median, just as the tire pressure reached zero.  A long story short, this Toy just saved our RV from being pummeled by a shredded tire, and it also saved us the cost of having to buy a new tire. Once the tire tech reached us the tire was able to be saved and a faulty tire valve replaced. The savings this device just gave us were enormous. A TPMS is well worth the investment.
